You scoop the box, and a few hours later the smell is back? Before you blame the litter, an honest warning: no cat litter controls odor on its own. The best cat litter for odor control is the one your cat uses happily, in a box that’s scooped often and filled to the right depth. Perfume usually works against you.

Quick answer: choose an unscented clumping litter, fill about 1–2 inches, and scoop at least daily. For a classic clay, Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented is the most-reviewed pick we found; for a plant-based option, World’s Best Multiple Cat Unscented (corn). Tidy Cats Free and Clean and Fresh Step Simply Unscented add activated charcoal without fragrance.

What vets and welfare groups say#

The advice is remarkably consistent across sources:

  • Unscented. The ASPCA and the Cornell Feline Health Center say most cats prefer unscented litter. The AAHA/AAFP feline guidelines add that some cats find scented litters aversive, and International Cat Care warns that scents can be overpowering for cats.
  • Clumping, fine to medium texture. Most adult cats prefer clumping litter (AAHA/AAFP, ASPCA). International Cat Care says a fine, sand-like litter is closest to what cats instinctively favor.
  • Shallow. About 1–2 inches (ASPCA, Cornell); International Cat Care cites about 3 cm.
  • Clean. Scoop at least once a day (ASPCA) — International Cat Care says at least twice — and fully replace the litter and wash the box regularly with hot water or unscented soap. Avoid strongly scented cleaners.
  • Same litter they grew up with. Litter preferences form early; if you switch, do it gradually by mixing in the new one.

And if your cat starts going outside the box, Cornell and the ASPCA both say to see your vet first to rule out a medical problem.

Clay, corn or charcoal?#

  • Clumping clay (bentonite): forms hard clumps that are easy to remove completely. Heavy and can be dusty, depending on the brand.
  • Corn and other plant-based litters: lighter and often marketed as low-dust. Clumping strength varies by brand.
  • Activated charcoal: some clay litters add it to absorb odor without perfume. Check the label says unscented or “no added fragrance.”

Whatever you pick, odor control claims on the bag are manufacturer claims, usually “when used as directed” — meaning with regular scooping.

The routine matters more than the brand#

  1. Scoop daily (twice is better) and top up to keep the depth at 1–2 inches.
  2. Empty and wash the box every few weeks with hot water and unscented soap.
  3. Right-size the box — a cramped box gets soiled faster. See our guides to a litter box for a small apartment and a litter box for large cats.
  4. One box per cat, plus one (ASPCA, Cornell, AAHA/AAFP).

Bottom line#

For odor control, think unscented, clumping, shallow and scooped often. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is the most-reviewed clay we found, World’s Best Multiple Cat is the plant-based pick, and Tidy Cats Free and Clean and Fresh Step Simply Unscented add charcoal without perfume. If the smell persists despite a clean box, or your cat avoids it, check with your vet.

Frequently asked questions

Is scented cat litter better for odor?

Not for most cats. The ASPCA and the Cornell Feline Health Center say most cats prefer unscented litter, and the AAHA/AAFP feline guidelines note that some cats find scented litters aversive. Odor control comes mainly from clumping, depth and frequent scooping.

How deep should cat litter be?

The ASPCA and Cornell recommend about one to two inches; International Cat Care cites research showing cats prefer about 3 cm (just over an inch).

How often should I scoop and change the litter?

International Cat Care recommends scooping at least twice a day and fully emptying and washing the box every 2–4 weeks with clumping litter (weekly with non-clumping). The ASPCA recommends scooping at least once a day.

Is clumping litter better than non-clumping?

Most cats prefer clumping litter, according to the AAHA/AAFP guidelines and the ASPCA. It's also easier to remove all the soiled litter, which keeps the box cleaner.
