Bought a scratching post and your cat still goes for the couch? The post is usually too short, too wobbly or in the wrong place. Here’s what makes a cat scratching post your cat will actually use.

Quick answer: choose a post tall enough for a full stretch (the ASPCA says at least 3 feet), heavy-based and covered in a rough material like sisal, and put it right next to the furniture your cat scratches. The Amazon Basics Large (35.4 in) is the tallest of our picks; the SmartCat Ultimate (32 in) is a sisal classic with a 16 x 16 in base.

Why cats scratch#

According to International Cat Care, scratching removes the outer layer of the claws, keeping them sharp and healthy, and is also a way to mark territory: glands between the toes leave scent. It’s normal and necessary, including for indoor cats. Trimming claws can reduce damage but doesn’t replace the need to scratch.

What makes a good post#

  1. Height. As tall as your cat standing on its hind legs, fully stretched (International Cat Care). The ASPCA recommends at least 3 feet.
  2. Stability. A post that wobbles or tips can scare your cat off it for good. Look for a heavy base or wall fixing.
  3. Material. The ASPCA lists sisal, burlap and tree bark as textures cats like.
  4. Variety. Some cats prefer vertical posts, others horizontal surfaces; the ASPCA suggests offering different types.
  5. Location. Next to the scratched furniture and near where your cat sleeps.

How to encourage it#

  • Play with a wand toy around the base of the post, as International Cat Care suggests.
  • Reward your cat when it uses the post.
  • Don’t force your cat’s paws onto the post — the ASPCA warns this can backfire.
  • Keep a worn post: the ASPCA notes it’s the one your cat likes best.

Most-reviewed

SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post, 32 in

Who it’s for: most adult cats, and owners who want a simple, sturdy sisal post.

What the listing says (checked Oct 19, 2026):

  • 32 in tall on a 16 x 16 in base, designed to prevent tipping and wobbling.
  • Woven sisal surface; assembles with two included screws.
  • 4.7 out of 5 from 34,130 ratings at the time we checked.

Heads-up: 32 in is slightly under the ASPCA’s 3-foot suggestion. It works for many cats, but a very long cat may need something taller.

Bottom line#

A good scratching post is tall, stable, rough and in the right place. The Amazon Basics Large gives the most height, the MECOOL 34" adds sisal and a toy (check the size selected), and the SmartCat Ultimate is the most-reviewed classic. Put it next to the couch, make it fun, and be patient.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a cat scratching post be?

Tall enough for your cat to stretch out fully while scratching. International Cat Care says the post should be as tall as the cat standing on its hind legs with front legs extended; the ASPCA recommends at least 3 feet.

Sisal or carpet?

The ASPCA lists sisal, burlap and tree bark as surfaces cats like. Rough, durable textures that shred are a good choice; the SmartCat listing argues carpet can snag claws.

Where should I put the scratching post?

Next to the furniture your cat already scratches and near where it sleeps, since cats often scratch after waking up. In multi-cat homes, International Cat Care recommends one post per cat plus one, in different places.

Should I throw away a worn-out post?

Not right away. The ASPCA notes that a shredded post is the one your cat likes most. Add a new one before removing the old one.

Is declawing an alternative?

The ASPCA opposes declawing. A good post, regular claw trims and positive training are the recommended approach.
